A football team supposed to be formed with Sumitomo Metal Industries' football club as the parent body and with Kashima town (present Kashima City), Kamisu and Hasaki towns(present Kamisu City) and their neighboring areas as its home town was selected as one of the member teams of the Japan professional football league (J.League) in February 1991. In the background of this selection was an accepted understanding that the birth of professional football teams in Japan should be meant to serve as the major pillar for "building sweet towns" that has been promoted enbloc by local governments and local enterprises. The Football Association of Japan thought that the above-mentioned team would grow into a regionally-based football team pursued by the association. In October 1991, Kashima Antlers F.C., Ltd. was established with funds collected from five local governments and 43 local enterprises at that time. In April 1992, the "Kashima Antlers", the professional football team that was formed by disbanding the conventional Sumitomo Metal Industries' football club, started its activities.
